Frequently asked questions

Do I need any qualifications to start the course?

There are no pre requisites but the may be useful for the following professions: teachers, teaching assistants, yoga teachers, baby massage instructors, health professionals, early years workers, child care professionals and children’s centre staff.

Is there any additional work such as case studies to complete?

Yes following the theory and practical elements of the course you will be required to plan and delivery the following:
Plan and deliver a group case study with at least 4 parents and babies/ children over 4 sessions.
We advise on the course how best to find the volunteers.

Do I need to be able to play an instrument?

No not at all. The course is written in a way it assumes that instructors do not play an instrument but we do give advice for those to can play or wish to learn on how to integrate them into the classes.

Do I need to be able to sing?

No not at all. You just need an enthusiasm for sharing music and movement with children.

Do I need to do training to run my own music and movement classes?

There are no legal regulations for the training you need to set up music and movement classes for children in your local community hall for example. Some people may choose to set up their own class structure and run their classes. However our course is offering you our years of experience in running these sessions for parents and their children, our fun, active, lively and sensory filled class structures, along with our 5 composed chosen songs and all the support around this.

Will I be a qualified music teacher or music therapist when I complete the course?

No -  this course DOES NOT train you to become a qualified music teacher or therapist you would need to undertake specialist training over a number of years, often at university to be able to do that. What is does do is offer you a great fun and sensory filled way to be able to run simple and interactive music and movement sessions within the community.

Libby Shone

For the last 10 years, Libby Shone has developed a successful balance between professional musician, vocal coach, and entertainment industry advisor. While studying for her BMus in Popular Music Performance at the London College of Music, Libby formed and ran her own function/covers band (“Straight Up” and “Re-Play”), both of which performed on a weekly basis at various venues in Central London as well as being hired for weddings, birthdays, and other corporate events. She also ran iSing, a jam night in Acton that focused on vocalists. She was able to share her singing experiences with the Diploma and First Year Degree students, offering valuable performance advice, tips on vocal techniques and generally supporting them in their musical journey. Libby continues to teach vocal skills privately in her home and has expanded to studio singing, live performance and theory lessons. Her understanding approach as well as being able to “practise what you preach” has made her an extremely popular choice as a singing teacher.

Libby has been able to amalgamate these skills as owner of Music and Me in London, an exciting company that focuses on developing children’s musical interests from an early age. Libby takes the lead with her guitar and confident vocal style, using physical movement and interactive music-making to allow adults to support their child’s creative development as well as helping to build the child-caregiver relationship in a positive and fun way!
