Bringing the Group Back Together: Simple Strategies to Re-Engage Babies and Parents
In our To Baby and Beyond community, we love hearing the creative ways our instructors keep sessions flowing smoothly, especially during those moments when little ones (and grown-ups!) need a gentle reset. Recently, a lovely discussion unfolded on our Facebook group about boosting engagement, and we just had to share the inspiration. Try these out in your baby massage, baby yoga, toddler yoga or Music and Movement sessions.
The Power of Movement
Instructor Kellsey kicked off the conversation by sharing one of her go-to strategies when energy in the room begins to dip:
“If engagement starts to wane I do either a walking-round song or use the parachute - something to bring everyone back together.”
Walking-round songs immediately caught everyone’s attention, including fellow instructor Ruth, who asked for more details.
What Is a Walking-Round Song?
Kellsey explained that these songs aren’t just about moving - they create connection, curiosity and a sense of shared fun. In her classes, parents and babies walk around in a circle, often moving into the centre to “meet” each other before exploring themed actions.
Depending on the song, Kellsey weaves in simple, imaginative movements such as:
-
Transport-themed songs: ducking under a bridge, turning like a roundabout, or doing a little jump over a speed bump.
-
Pirate-themed songs: bobbing to search for buried treasure or gently swaying baby as if “swabbing the deck.”
These playful moments help reset the energy in the room, refocus attention, and give babies a chance to engage through movement and rhythm.
Why It Works
As Ruth reflected, walking-round songs could be a wonderful addition during baby massage, baby yoga, toddler yoga or Music & Movement sessions especially at times when babies are feeling a bit unsettled:
“Something like this could be good when things are a bit unsettled perhaps.”
We couldn’t agree more. Movement-based songs are a fantastic way to transition between activities, soothe restlessness, or simply add a burst of fun.
Bringing It Into Your Own Sessions
If you’re a baby or toddler class instructor, walking-round songs can be adapted to almost any theme. Think seasonal activities, daily routines, or even sensory adventures. The key is simple movements, clear actions, and lots of opportunities for interaction.
And if you’re a parent, these ideas work beautifully at home too! A little movement, music and imagination can transform the mood in seconds.
If you’d like more class inspiration, activity ideas or training opportunities, To Baby and Beyond is here to support your journey every step of the way.
